 By Eileen Guevara

"Life inflicts the same setbacks and tragedies on the optimist as on the pessimist, but the optimist withstands them better."

-Martin Seligman

Martin Seligman is known as the pioneer of positive psychology, he explains that happiness does not always depend on our social status, our religion, or our physical beauty.

Seligman is the director of the University of Pennsylvania’sPositive Psychology Center, he has written about 20 books and over 200 scholarly publications. Seligman is a foremost expert in resilience, depression, optimism, and pessimism. He has been honored with prestigious awards such as the William James Fellow Award from the American Psychological Society and the James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award. Seligman delivers lectures globally, addressing audiences of educators, mental health professionals, and parents.

Seligman is the founder of a theory about depression, known as the "Learned Helplessness Theory," suggests that depression can develop when a person perceives they have no control over their environment, even when they have the capability to change circumstances. This can happen after experiencing stressful or traumatic events, where attempts to control the situation repeatedly fail.
